The Long and Short of It | Bonnie Stahlecker | June 9, 2023
Workshop Title: The Long and Short of It
Workshop Time: 9:30am - 4:30pm
Workshop Date(s): June 9, 2023
Location: 2905 S Elati Street, Englewood, CO USA 80110-3073
Workshop Fee: $160
Materials Fee: $30 per student
Workshop Description:
This motivating one-day workshop utilizes two lengths of stitches. The long stitches on the book’s spine are used to construct the binding, and the short stitches on the front cover will create the decoration. Participants have a choice for the cover embellishment. They can generate their design of appliqué or cut-outs with highlighted stitches. Or they may use a historical lacing pattern called the White Rose found on vellum archival bindings. While those patterns were laced with vellum strips, this one will be done with colored waxed thread. More cover adornment options are shown in the workshop.
The text paper is Arches Text Wove, and the cover is garment-weight leather lined with flax paper. Fore-edge ties provide the closure system. Each person will make one 6 by 4 1/2 inch journal with 120 pages. All are welcome.
Materials fee payable to instructor directly the day of the class: $30.00 per student
Required Tools: (many of these are available if needed) Bone folder, Scissors, Pencil, Awl (non-tapered, choose one that makes holes about 1mm), Metal ruler, X-acto knife with sharp blades (or snap-off knife, instructor likes the Olfa brand), Cutting mat
Optional: reading glasses, Japanese Screw Punch
